• Career Portfolios

Each student in the Grand Forks Career & Technical Consortium is given a Student Education/Career Portfolio in which to compile their Educational/Career Planning Unit booklets and supplement materials. Students begin the portfolio process in sixth grade.

Within the portfolio is a separate four-page leaflet on which the student annually records honors/awards, achievements, and volunteer activities, as well as any paid work experience. Specific test scores and assessment labels (such as Explore, PLAN, ACT, PSAT, etc.) may be adhered to the back of this leaflet by the school counselor. In the eighth grade unit, students are assisted in beginning a four-year plan of high school classes which is penciled in on the fourth page of the leaflet.

Portfolios are annually used by the counselors to assist students during course registration for the following year. The information in the portfolios helps the counselor get a bigger picture of the student's goals, and is used to help choose the most appropriate courses. Changes on the four-year plan are recorded as they occur.

A summary card is a quick reference for the student, parent(s)/guardian(s), and counselors and is printed on heavy stock paper that sticks out above the top edge of the portfolio so that it's easy to access. Each year the student summarizes the key points from the unit, such as Multiple Intelligence Strengths from seventh grade unit. Besides the yearly review of and additions to the portfolio by the students, the portfolio is shared with parent(s)/guardian(s) during the 7th, 9th, 10th, and 12th grade Student Education Career Planning Conferences. Educational/Career Portfolios are stored in the counselor's office until transfer or high school graduation.
