Job Shadowing
Students in grades 9-12 are eligible to explore a career or career area by job shadowing or attending a career forum. These activities involve an application process on the part of the students and approval of parents. Once they have chosen a career of high interest, received attendance clearance, and arranged to be absent from classes they are matched with a person in the community to experience the occupation in action. An informational career forum may take the place of an actual "shadow experience" in career areas where confidentiality is an issue.
Community people that agree to participate are contacted when a student requests their specific field. A time and date that works best for the professional is chosen and the appointment is set. A written confirmation is sent as well as possible questions that the student may ask. Visits may last a couple of hours to one full day, depending on the occupation chosen and time available.
