Michele Felton (Hurley) graduated from Central in 1986 and is recognized as one of the finest athletes ever to compete on the track for GFC. The former Grand Forks Herald Female Athlete of the Year was a two time Honorable Mention All-American and placed 6th in the nation in the AAU 800 meter run. Primarily competing in the 800 and 1600 meter runs as well as relays, Michele completed her high school career with four Eastern Dakota Conference titles, as well as four North Dakota State Track Meet championships, highlighted by an incredible senior season when she won a dramatic 1600 meter run as well as leading her 1600 meter relay team to first place on the podium. In addition to her success in track & field, Michele was named to the All-State team in Cross Country, and also was a GFC cheerleader and member of the dance team.
Michele recalls her years at GFC with great fondness, particularly the love and kindness that she felt from teachers and coaches. She is honored to join the same Hall of Fame as her beloved “Sully”, Coach Pat Sullivan. One standout memory is of her sophomore season in track when she defeated a five-time defending state champion in the 800 meter run, “. . . on the back stretch it looked like one person running, we were stride for stride, my 5’0 frame against her 5’8 frame.” Michele is convinced that the small town values she learned in high school have served her throughout her life.
Michele and her family live in Bellingham, Washington where she is the owner of Fitness First by Michele. She has three “beautiful, intelligent, and successful” children who have been blessed with their mother’s athletic skills and competitive spirit.
