A standout member of the girls’ tennis team, Carol was a four-year letter winner.  In 1973 and 1974, the team won the state team championship and she was also the 1973 and 1974 individual and doubles champions.  She was named all-conference in 1973, 1974 and 1975 and was team MVP in 1975. Carol was a 2-time defending doubles state champion and was undefeated going into her senior year. She was the top player at 47-0 going into the state tourney. In the quarter finals she re-injured her ankle and continued playing rather than forfeiting the match. She defaulted the 3rd place match. She represented North Dakota in Washington DC in a national tournament for her accomplishments in the North Dakota state tournament the past summer. She was also the recipient of the Janna Gulberg Outstanding Cheerleader Award.

In looking back on her years at Grand Forks Central, Carol says “we had a great group of players and a coach who was dedicated. Mary Paukert wanted us to succeed both on and off the court. My teammates and I all had a great respect and pride for our school and wanted to show this at all times. When we had matches out of town, good sportsmanship and respectful behavior was always important.”

I remember special friendships I made through sports. Even practice sessions were fun because of the people. Football and hockey seasons were a time to be together and show school spirit. I had great teachers who cared about us and showed an interest in our extracurricular activities.

Carol currently lives in Grand Forks with her husband, Bob. After high school she attended UND and played on the tennis team. She graduated with an education degree and currently teaches at Kelly Elementary School.  They have 2 daughters, Megan and Katie. They both graduated from GFC as honor students, played tennis and volleyball, and cheered for hockey.
