Unbeaten in two cross country seasons, including two state championships, and setting 1,600 and 3,200 meter school records that still stand, Jim Herberg is truly one of GFC's most accomplished athletes. A stress fracture in the spring of his senior year kept him from breaking his own track records, but not from earning an athletic scholarship to the University of Oklahoma where he earned four letters and was a team captain for the Sooners.

Jim recalls his coaches, Vince Ames in cross country and Pat Sullivan in track, and their influence on him. He feels that one of the things that really makes Central special is the sense of history and tradition, and he is especially appreciative of the legacy that Cliff Cushman left for athletes in Grand Forks. Amongst his fondest memories are long runs on the Lincoln golf course with teammates, “it doesn't get any better than that."

A noted civil and environmental engineer in Southern California, Jim and his wife Shauna have two daughters, Natalie and Haley, who are successful runners themselves. His advice to GFC students is to try and find your passion and go after it. “Get with the program, have fun, and go all in.”
