David Geatz (1972-1975) participated in tennis at Red River. He was named All-EDC four consecutive years, and was the undefeated state high school champion as a sophomore, junior, and senior, as well as the North Dakota Athlete of the Year in 1975. He ended his prep career with an overall record of 104-3. He was featured in Sports Illustrated Faces in the Crowd for winning 90 matches in a row. At the collegiate level, David played at both New Mexico State University and the University of New Mexico, where he claimed conference titles in both singles and doubles. He played professionally and was the first player in North Dakota history to receive a tennis world ranking in both singles and doubles. He was head coach at the University of Minnesota from 1988-2006, where his team won five Big Ten Championships and made twelve NCAA tournament appearances. He was a three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year recipient and left Minnesota as the school’s all-time winningest coach. He is currently the head men’s tennis coach at the University of Pennsylvania.
