Claude Smith (1973-1976) participated in cross country and track and field at Red River, earning six varsity letters. Claude was the state champion in the 880, mile, 2-mile, and 2-mile relay at the 1976 State Track Meet, the first athlete to ever win all four distance events at the state meet. During that meet, the state record was set in the 2-mile relay and he set a new record in the mile run. His lead-off leg in the two mile relay was clocked at 1:55.8 which also would have been a state record in the open 880. As an individual, he finished in the top five at the State Cross Country Meet in 1973, 1974, and 1975. He was a key member of Red River’s two State Championship cross country teams in 1973 and 1975, as well as the runner-up team in 1974. Claude attended Jamestown University from 1976-1980, where he received numerous individual and team conference and district awards in track and cross country. Claude’s accomplishments still stand the test of time. He is the current Red River school record holder in the 1600m Run and #2 in the 3200m Run as well as a member of the school record 4x800 meter relay team, which was the first team in state history to break the eight-minute barrier.
