Nick Cichy (1980-1993) Following his Hall of Fame playing career at NDSU, Nick Cichy was an assistant coach under the tutelage of his father Sid Cichy at Fargo Shanley before becoming the head coach at Red River High School in 1980. Cichy spent 13 successful seasons as the head coach of the Roughriders, finishing as state runners-up in 1982 and 1987, and making it to the state semi-finals in 1981, 1983, and 1991. He finished his career as the head coach of the Roughriders with a 76 -52 record. Nick brought a calm, but fierce demeanor to coaching, earning the respect of every one of his players. In addition to coaching, Nick was also a counselor at Red River from 1980 to 2008 and also spent 7 additionals at Community High. Under the lights, on a Friday night in eastern North Dakota, you could always find Nick Cichy walking the sidelines of a football field, donning a cowboy hat and cowboy boots, proud to be a Roughrider.
