Bob Zimney (1978-2016) was the head coach for the boys track and field team from 1979-2015 and also was an assistant in 1978 and in 2016. His 37 years as head coach is the longest tenure for a head coach in the Grand Forks Public School’s history. Throughout his historic career Bob’s teams won 2 state team titles in 1983 & 1992 and they were the state runner-up 3 times in 1988, 1991, and 2009. His teams also won 7 region titles, and 14 east region runner-up finishes during his helm as head coach. His athletes won 104 region championships, 19 region relay titles, 56 individual state championships, as well as 10 state relay titles. He was named the Class A boys state track & field coach of the year on 4 different occasions and was the region coach of the year 15 times. Bob was also an assistant football coach for 31 years for the Roughriders. He was inducted into the North Dakota track and field hall of fame in 2012, the NDHSCA Hall of fame in 2012, the Mayville State University Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame in 2013, the National High School Athletic Association Coaches Hall of Fame in 2016, and in 2016 he was also named the National High School Coach of the Year for Boys Track. Bob is extra proud of the fact that two of his longtime assistant coaches, Tim Delmore and Tim Tandeski, have both been inducted into the North Dakota High School Track & Field Hall of Fame.
