Junior Achievement

Junior Achievement is an international non profit education organization that partners community and education to increase knowledge of our free enterprise system and teach kids how business works.

JA has been in existence since 1919 reaching over 4 million students in the US and over 100 countries worldwide. Working in partnership with the classroom teacher, volunteers with varied backgrounds from business and community, visit the classroom presenting five economic related lessons and activities.

JA volunteers are key to the program, also providing valuable career information by sharing their own work experiences, and character education exemplifying volunteerism.  JA emphasizes the importance and value of education and is an excellent bridge connecting education to the world of work.

A brief training session and a classroom kit, including all necessary materials, are available at no charge to the volunteer. (The classroom teacher also receives a JA Guidebook.)

Junior Achievement's Elementary School Program demonstrates how economics impacts people's lives as workers, consumers, and citizens. Students will grasp and build on these important concepts as they progress in school, enhancing their understanding of the world around them and how this awareness can positively affect their future. In the Grand Forks Public Schools, Junior Achievement is delivered to all Grade 4 students and available for all students in Grades K-5 by teacher's request. The schools of the Grand Forks Consortium* are also invited to participate. *(Central Valley, Emerado, Larimore, Manvel, Northwood, and Thompson)

Community volunteers are a key component of the Junior Achievement program providing valuable enhancement to the classroom experience.

Distinguishing Features of the Grand Forks Area Elementary Schools Junior Achievement Program

Made possible through a partnership between the Grand Forks Public Schools (GFPS) and Job Service North Dakota (JSND).

Locally sponsored by Vaaler Insurance, Xcel Energy, Community National Bank, Bremer Bank, Brady Martz and Associates, Pederson Implement of Larimore, 1st State Bank of Thompson, and the Thompson Farmer's Co-op Elevator, Wal-Mart, Marshall Fields, and Alerus Financial.

Community volunteers facilitate the lessons and activities with the classroom teacher.

Materials, training, and support are provided by JA and GFPS staff.

Program themes are age appropriate for each grade level.

Five 45 to 60-minute economic related lessons.

Complements the classroom curriculum.
