Homeless Program

At Grand Forks Public Schools, we recognize that families may face housing instability, and we are committed to supporting students in these circumstances. Our district has a McKinney–Vento liaison who serves as a guide and resource for families. This individual can answer questions, connect families to services, and help ensure that students receive the educational opportunities and stability they deserve.

Whether it’s assistance with enrollment, transportation, school supplies, or simply navigating available community supports, our liaison is here to partner with families. If you or someone you know is experiencing homelessness, please reach out—we are here to help every student thrive.

Who is Considered Homeless?

“homeless” student is defined as a child or youth lacking a fixed, permanent, and adequate nighttime residence. This includes:

  • Sharing the housing of others due to economic hardship.

  • Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or campgrounds.

  • Living in transitional housing or emergency shelters.

  • Living in places not designed or intended for sleeping.

  • Living in cars, parks, abandoned buildings, bus stations, or similar settings.

  • Unaccompanied youth living in any of the above situations without the custody of a parent or guardian.

What Questions Should I Ask About Services Under McKinney–Vento?

  • Who is the local homeless liaison? How can I contact them?

  • If my child changes schools, who can help us transfer records quickly?

  • How can my child receive free meals at school?

  • How can my child receive free school supplies if needed?

  • Who can help if my child needs special education services?

  • What academic help is available (Title I programs, after-school tutoring, etc.)?

  • Are there extracurricular activities available for my child?

  • How can my child go on class field trips or participate in other activities if I can’t pay?

  • Is there a preschool program for my younger children?
