Grand Forks Public Schools Receives Funds from BCBSND Caring Foundation

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Grand Forks Public Schools received funding this spring from Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota’s (BCBSND) Caring Foundation to support Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA).

With the funds provided, the school system will be able to conduct eight YMHFA classes for parents/ guardians and four classes for school employees by the end of 2020.

The goal of YMHFA is to equip as many adult community members as possible with the knowledge and confidence to identify and intervene when a young person is experiencing a mental health crisis.

“By equipping adults, we are adding a layer of protection to the youth in our community and state. We hope everybody leaves the course feeling empowered and realizes that they can make a difference and save lives,” said Taunya Schleicher, grant writer at Grand Forks Public Schools.

BCBSND Caring Foundation is dedicated to funding programs aimed at improving mental health resources across the state.

“In today’s society due to stigma, it’s hard to say, ‘I am struggling, and I need help.’ BCBSND Caring Foundation is proud to partner with Grand Forks Public Schools to provide funding to help school staff learn the difference between typical adolescent development and the warning signs of mental illness,” said Amber Blomberg, BCBSND Caring Foundation Manager.

Grand Forks Public Schools will also continue to partner with Altru TEARS (Together we Educate About the Realities of Suicide) in an attempt to bring YMHFA classes to the Grand Forks community for years come.

Established in 1989, the BCBSND Caring Foundation (www.BCBSND.com/Caring-Foundation) focuses on key health issues that help improve the health and well-being of North Dakotans and their communities.
