South Student Named to Superintendent’s Student Cabinet

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Eli Zerr, an 8th grade student at South Middle School, was one of 23 students selected from across the state to serve in North Dakota State School Superintendent Kirsten Baesler’s student cabinet.

The cabinet provides Baesler with advice and opinions about how to improve North Dakota’s schools and the direction of state education policy.

Students serve for approximately 18 months, typically meeting every three months.

“My student cabinets have been an invaluable source of information and advice about what is good about our schools, and how things can be better,” said Baesler. “It has been especially important to hear from the cabinet members during the (COVID-19) pandemic. They have provided essential information and details about how COVID-19 has affected education in their schools.”

The newly-seated student cabinet will have its first meeting in March.

Applicants for the cabinet positions were asked to write responses to several questions. The applications were reviewed and scored by a team of North Dakota Department of Public Instruction employees from outside the superintendent’s office.
